Q.Can I change or cancel my Will after I have created one?

A.Yes. To cancel, or revoke, your entire Will all you need to do is intentionally (purposely) tear it up, shred it, burn it, or destroy it. If you later decide to execute a new Will, your new Will should say, "All prior Wills are no longer valid."

If you want to change a small or minorprovision in your Will, you can do so by adding a codicil. Generally a codicil is used to remove an asset that has been sold, to add a newly purchased asset and add a beneficiary for that asset, or to completely change the list of beneficiaries and what they will receive.

Each codicil to a Will must be identified (codicil no. 1 to my Will dated "x"), must clearly and specifically state what is being changed, and most importantly must adhere to the legal requirements of your state for Wills as to form, witnesses, and signature.

In some states, a witness to the execution of the codicil may not be a beneficiary of the Will or codicil.
