Q.What is the Green Card Lottery (US Diversity Visa Program)?

A.The United States Diversity Visa Program provides for the issuance of 50,000 immigrant visas to people who come from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States (defined as less than 50,000 in the last five years). These visas are not made available for people who come from countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the past five years.

The State Department's National Visa Center holds the lottery every year, and via a computerized lottery system randomly chooses the winners from all qualified entries. If you are selected under this Green Card Lottery you will be given the opportunity to apply for permanent residence. If permanent residence is granted, then you will be authorized to travel freely to and from the U.S., to live and work permanently in the U.S., and to receive health, education, taxation, retirement, and social security benefits. You will also be allowed to serve as a sponsor to bring your spouse and any unmarried children under the age of 21 to the United States. A green card holder may also apply for U.S. citizenship.
