Q.What is the difference between a mechanic's lien and a stop notice?

A.A mechanics’ lien is a lien placed by a contractor, subcontractor or supplier of materials or equipment against a property because of non-payment; it makes it difficult or impossible for the property owner to sell or refinance the property and allows the lien holder to initiate judicial foreclosure proceedings.

A stop notice is a lien that attaches to the property owner's construction funds, but are only available to subcontractors and suppliers that have no contract with the property owner.
