Q.Can the landlord raise my rent if I get a roommate?

A.Under California law, yes. if your apartment is subject to rent control the landlord has the right to add a 10% surcharge to your rent if you bring in a roommate. If the roommate later leaves, the landlord must decrease your rent by the amount she or he increased it when notified about the roommate. However, if you are replacing an old roommate with a new roommate, then the landlord cannot raise your rent.
