Q.Can the landlord lock me out?

A.NO. By law, a landlord who wants you to move cannot lock you out, change the locks, or remove your belongings, or turn off the utilities. If any of these things occur, you can sue the landlord. If you win your case, the landlord will not only have to pay for any actual damages (e.g., cost of replacing spoiled food in your refrigerator), but also for your legal fees and costs and possibly statutory penalties (e.g., up to $100 for each day the utilities were turned off, or a minimum $250 for each law violated). However, if you lose the case you may have to pay the landlord’s legal fees and costs.
