Q.Is there a general rule on how much severance an employer should pay?

A.NO, but we will offer some general guidelines anyway. First, an employer has no obligation or duty to provide severance pay. Second, employers rarely offer severance pay to hourly workers. Employers who do offer severance will typically provide one week severance per year of service to employees below the officer or executive rank, and up to one month’s severance per year of service to executives and officers.
