Q.How can I get a Fraud Alert placed on my credit file?

A.You may place a fraud alert in your credit file by calling just one of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. As soon as that agency processes your fraud alert, it will notify the other two, which then also must place the fraud alert in your file.

You can reach the three credit reporting agencies at:

Equifax
Tel: 1-800-525-6285
Website: www.equifax.com
Mail:
P.O. Box 740241
Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

Experian
Tel: 1-888-397-3742
Website: www.experian.com/fraud
Mail:
P.O. Box 9352
Allen, Texas 75013

TransUnion
Tel: 1-800-680-7289
Website: www.transunion.com
Mail:
P.O. Box 6790
Fullerton, California 92834-6790

An initial fraud alert stays in your file for 90 days. An extended alert stays in your credit file for seven years. For more detailed information about identity theft, visit theFTC.
