Q.Will My Divorce Decree Protect Me From My Ex-Spouses' Creditors If My Ex-spouse Files For Bankruptcy?

A.No. If you have co-signed any loan, credit card, or other debt with your ex-spouse, the creditors can hold either spouse 100% responsible for the entire outstanding debt, even if your divorce decree assigns the entire debt to your ex-spouse. Your divorce decree only addresses any recourse you may have against your ex-spouse; the creditors were not a party to your divorce and did not agree to any of the terms of your divorce.
